I am a neo-Latinist and intellectual historian, and am Cassamarca Chair of Latin Humanism at the University of Western Australia, Perth. I was a Investigator in the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions: 1100-1800 where I ran team projects on "Passions for Learning", "Jesuit Emotions", and lead an interdisciplinary research cluster on "Language and Emotion". In March 2016 I co-organized an inaugural Medical Humanities workshop at the University of Western Australia under the auspices of its Institute of Advanced Studies, which has led to the establishment of a local research network. I was Chair of Latin and Director of the Institute of Greece, Rome and the Classical Tradition, 2017-2018. While I was in Europe I gave the 39th annual Erasmus birthday lecture in Amsterdam on ‘Erasmus and the health of scholars: physical, emotional, spiritual’.
