Synapsis is the Greek for connection, suggests the idea of synopsis and gives rise to the neural synapse. A synopsis is a general feeling, a condensation and an abstract. The one hundred trillion to one quadrillion synapses in the human brain receive and articulate neuronal inputs. These synapses bridge neurons, but also modify, dampen, and augment signals. The synapse is the site of memory and perhaps consciousness. We want our journal to bridge disciplinary divides, connecting the biological sciences with the humanities and social sciences. We want to provide a synoptic view, a more comprehensive picture of human knowledge. Science is not neutral and can only be properly valued in a context that emphasizes vulnerability, equality and uncertainty.
