To provide students with a humanistic and social study of illness, health and the body, by examining how individuals and institutions articulate and disseminate conceptions of the body, including constituent issues such as race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender.

The minor “provides students with a humanistic and social study of illness, health and the body. Drawing upon concepts found in the disciplines contributing to the minor, courses in the curriculum share the common focus of examining how individuals and institutions articulate and disseminate conceptions of the body, including constituent issues such as race, ethnicity, sexuality and gender.” This 18-credit minor draws its courses from three colleges: The College of Arts and Letters; the College of Health and Behavioral Studies; and, the College of Integrated Science and Engineering. Students select six courses (with no more than two from any discipline) from a permanent set of 21 electives. They also make take “substitute electives,” special topics courses offered by contributing units that are approved by the minor’s Steering Committee members.
