Transitions: Living and Dying Well

University of Tennessee

To teach students about the meaning of death and the dead for the living, over time and across cultures; about the significance to human communities (past and present) of care; and about the often invisible emotional and psychological labor that care entails.

This is a program in development that would highlight the broad variety of work being done at UT in the humanities, health sciences, and forensic sciences aimed at teaching students about the meaning of death and the dead for the living, over time and across cultures; about the significance to human communities (past and present) of care; and about the often invisible emotional and psychological labor that care entails. The program highlights the unique scholarly landscape UT supports, where so many faculty are involved in so many programs centered on death – including the body farm, the Odd Fellows cemetery project, and the Knoxville National Cemetery Veterans Legacy Program.
